Working Structures

The highest authority is the General Assembly consisting of representatives of all members, which convenes once a year. There are normally two meetings in Europe followed by one in North America or in another region. The Executive Board which has all power to carry on the business of ICSTI between meetings of the General Assembly is composed of the Officers - President, Vice President, General Secretary, Treasurer - the Chairman of the Technical Activities Coordinating Committee (TACC), and not less than 2 and not more than 5 representatives of Full Members, elected every three years by the General Assembly. The Executive Board carries out the decisions of the General Assembly and gives effect to the general policies of ICSTI. The Executive Board for the 2010-2013 triennium consists of :

9 Mar 2012 - Chaired by Jan BRASE of the German National Library for Science and Technology, Committee members Roberta SHAFFER (Library of Congress, USA), QIAO Xiaodong (ISTIC, China) and Kirsi TUOMINEN (VTT, Finland) are now joined by Michael JUBB (RIN, UK). The IPC remains as an international forum that enables decision making on complex issues as well as creating collaborative relationships with peer organisations, and its remit and future focus have been reviewed at the Annual Members' Meeting in Paris on 3-4 March 2012.

ICSTI's 2012 Annual Members' Meeting was held in Paris, France, at the Headquarters of ICSU - the International Council for Science. It took place on 3-4 March.
The Overall Schedule of Events and other material prepared for the different meeting sessions are available in the Members' section of the website.

It was followed by an ICSTI One-Day Workshop, open to both Members and Non-Members, held at the same location. See below is the description and Program outline.

**'Delivering Data in Science'**

SUMMARY OF THE EVENT by John Helliwell and Brian McMahon (IUCr) - LIST OF PARTICIPANTS

Data is the foundation of modern science today. Today's enhanced science is data driven. The number of data produced has never been as colossal as it is today. At the same time fundamental principles of policy and management remain as challenges if the true value of data as research assets is to be realised :

Where to store the data ?
What part of the data to keep, as many experiments produce more data outcome than data storage exists ?
How to quality control data ?
How to make the data available ?
How to link from classical publications to data ?
How to award credit for the scientists who publish their data ?

In the last few years many initiatives have started to address these issues globally and locally. National administrative bodies have started to define national data policies, global initiatives like DataCite and the World Data System (WDS) have been established and publishers have started to link data from their online journals.

The Strategic Coordinating Committee on Information and Data (SCCID) was established by the International Council for Science (ICSU) in 2009 to advise on the future organization and direction of its activities in relation to scientific data and information. In its final report the committee gives 14 recommendations for the improvement of access and use of data for science.

This one day workshop introduces you to the final SCCID report and presents a global overview of initiatives and policy papers focused on the accessibility, management and re-use of data as scientific information. Topics include global case studies from all stakeholders : data centres, publishers, libraries, policy makers, funding bodies and scientific organisations.
