ICSTI's Multi-Contributor Technical Projects Program

Exploration of and innovation in leading-edge information science and technology are among ICSTI's key strategies. These activities are implemented through a suite of technical projects, and voluntary collaboration in these projects is perceived as a unique benefit of ICSTI membership. Projects are managed under the auspices of ICSTI's Technical Activities Coordinating Committee (TACC) and all have finite timescales and tangible outcomes. If you are interested in learning more about or participating in one or more of the following projects, please contact the ICSTI Secretariat.

Current Projects

Multimedia Search and Retrieval: Innovative Applications and Integration of Searchable Images, Graphs, Video, and Audio to Augment and Complement Textual Search Results.
This project explores approaches for enhancing access to multimedia scientific data by demonstrating an identification scheme for video, audio, images, graphs, and other visualization tools as well as the integration of these media types into the search and retrieval capabilities of prominent scientific search engines. Participants: U.S. Department of Energy Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI), The British Library, ProQuest, U.S. National Institutes of Health National Library of Medicine (NLM), and Microsoft Corporation.

Web 2.0 Peer-to-Peer Scientific Communication Applications.
This project explores, evaluates, and demonstrates Web 2.0 functionalities that promote peer-to-peer scientific communication and, in the larger context, serve to accelerate scientific progress. Participants: VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, National Institute of Scientific and Technical Information -- France (INIST), Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI), U.S. Department of Energy Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI), and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) Institute of Communication Sciences (ISCC).

Interactive Journal Articles.
The project will survey existing examples (e.g. applications in optical sciences (Optics Infobase); molecular visualizations in crystallography (Acta Cryst.), chemistry (Nature Chemistry) or structural biology (Biochemical Journal); mathematical functions (Electronic Journal of Mathematics & Technology); molecular clouds in astronomy (Nature); visualization of statistical tabular data (SourceOECD)). Available technologies will be identified and assessed for portability, usability and archivability. Particular attention will be paid to the ease of use of authoring, editing or annotation tools. An attempt will be made to identify features that will be common to different disciplines and that can easily be implemented on existing content delivery platforms.

Completed Projects

Numeric Data: Citation Techniques and Integration with Text.
This project explores approaches for enhancing access to numeric scientific data by (a) analyzing current limitations in data search and citations; (b) demonstrating state-of-the-art data citation practices already in existence; (c) demonstrating the integration of numeric data access through electronic textual information; and (d) recommending actions for the scientific, publishing, and search communities to improve access to numeric data. Participants include: German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB-Hannover), Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA), Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (CISTI), and U.S. Department of Energy Office of Scientific and Technical (OSTI).

This project has been completed in June 2009. See final project report here.
